Introducing LeashPro material design

There are well-established dog leash products in the market, but as a dog owner myself are there opportunities to enhance the user experience by incorporating new design elements or features that could improve comfort, durability, and overall appeal for both pets and owners?

Step 1: BENCHMARKING

Finding opportunities in the leash market

During a benchmark of various dog leashes, it was discovered that the two most commonly used by dog owners are the nylon leash and the retractable leash. However, the analysis of all leash types revealed a common issue: the handle. Many leashes feature handles that are too small, too hard, or uncomfortable, limiting hand mobility and making them difficult to hold for extended periods. These design flaws presents a significant pain point for dog owners, especially during longer walks or when needing to adjust the leash quickly. If the retractable leash were to be adjusted, it could become the preferred choice.

step 2: Service safari

A first-person experience walking the dog

I conducted a service safari by walking my dog and mapping the entire experience, capturing key moments and challenges through photographs. This hands-on approach allowed me to observe and document pain points in real-time, such as managing the leash, handling distractions, and balancing other tasks, providing valuable insights into the everyday struggles of dog owners.

Visualising the experience

During the service safari, several key pain points were identified.

  • Traditional dog leashes were found to be restrictive and challenging to manage in dynamic situations, such as when dog owners need both hands while trying to keep their dog close.

  • The lack of adaptability in current leashes creates frustration, particularly in unpredictable environments.

  • Many dog owners struggle with balancing multiple tasks, like managing the leash and picking up after their dog, which often leads to a less enjoyable walking experience.

step 3: DESIGN SOLUTION

Upgrading the retractable leash

The product vision centers on creating an adjustable, optional strap that attaches to the leash handle, allowing it to be secured to the wrist or arm for hands-free convenience. Designed for customizability, it accommodates different user preferences and strengths. Its intuitive mechanism ensures quick and effortless engagement or disengagement, enhancing ease of use.
